Since a few days ago, Manon no longer has a chest tube. While playing, it fell out and since there is limited drainage lately, they decided to wait before refitting it.
Monday, X-rays will be taken and the specialists will decide whether to reinsert the tube or wait a while.
I arrived in the city today and Manon's mood was very good all day. I hope tomorrow will be as positive.

Same old...
Rien trop a changé depuis quelques semaines.
Nothing much has changed in the last two weeks. Manon is still at the IWK and the drainage continues. She is being fed through her IV since almost three weeks ago, and though it is helping, there is still too much drainage to remove the chest tube.
Some are predicting Manon will be in Halifax for Christmas. One of the cardiologists thinks she will be home. This fall has been difficult, so am unfortunately not confident she will be out of the hospital for the holidays.
I am leaving for Halifax tomorrow. It has been too long since my last visit and I miss her terribly. November has been a very long month, and I fear December will be no different.

Manon was fed though her IV only for five days hoping the "break" to her digestive system would help with her fluid build up.
Since Monday, she has drained very little, so the have decided to allow her to eat foods on her diet menu to see if she can handle it. She will eat a bit more each day and they will monitor her progress.
The chest tube will remain in place for a while. It is counter productive to remove and reinsert it continually.
It is a positive sign that she is draining less and eating more. But it is far too early to predict her prognosis yet and if this lack of drainage will continue.

Long haul
Manon is back at the IWK since Thursday morning. This weekend, she will have nothing to drink or eat. The hope is that giving her stomach a break will help with the excess fluid.
No one can be sure when the drainage will stop : they can only say that one day it will all be over. Is it probable Manon will be here for quite some time...

Ugh.
Manon is coming home today. Though this may sound like good news at first, it definitely comes with a huge "but".
On Wednesday, Manon will have an X ray in Yarmouth. The cardiologist fears that the X ray will show a reoccurance of fluid build up, which will mean going BACK to Halifax mid-week. A chest tube would be reintroduced and her stay could be from 6-8 weeks.
It IS possible the X ray will be clear, but this is not the most likely outcome.
So why come home at all you ask ? First of all, she doesn't currently have a chest tube. She won't be getting an X ray before Wednesday in any event and she had a small procedure yesterday. They put her to sleep and extracted about 400mL of fluid using a long needle. So, for several days, fluid is not an issue.
Therefore, they thought it best to give everyone a much needed break at home before possibly returning for a long stretch in hospital. This visit may very well be short and the upcoming, possible trip to the IWK could be very long...
In Pubnico for Halloween. Is Christmas Manon's next holiday here at home ? Ugh.

Manon is using her time here in hospital to learn new things.
She can easily understand english and can communicate quite well. She has also started reading easy books used in primary and first grade classes.

Samedi
Manon was in a good mood for most of the day. She seems to be adapting well to her feeding tube and therefore much of the frustration associated with administering her meds is lessening.
Tomorrow, she will have an X-ray. If things look good, she could be out of here this week.
Even if she can leave, she will still be on her zero fat diet and will be going home with her feeding tube (for up to 6 weeks). Not quite ideal since Halloween and Mylène's birthday are rapidly approaching.

Nez
On verra.
Manon no longer has a chest tube. She does have a feeding tube in her nose (though it was removed earlier this evening, so they will need to put it back in tomorrow). The tube is purely for meds, not meals.
Manon had quite a bit of visit today, because of the meetings for all teachers.
There was talk again of going home early next week, but it is still premature to get too excited.

For the first time in a few days, Less fluid passed through Manon's chest tube. It is a positive sign if it means that there is less fluid in her chest.
Tomorrow, we will know more - especially if the levels are similar.

Weekend
Yesterday, there was talk of removing the chest tube on Monday. Today, there was talk of adding a feeding tube in her nose to better give some of the medications more easily.
Despite all of this, Manon's mood on the weekend was exemplary. She is a trooper when it comes to taking all of her medication and she allows the professionals to do their checkups.
Her diet has changed in hopes of altering her fluid difficulties.

Wednesday, Manon went for an appointment in Yarmouth. Unfortunately, they discovered she hadd too much fluid and she returned to the IWK. This morning, they had to put the chest tube back in.
She also has chyle, a fatty protein build up that is quite common when children have the Fontan surgery.
It is a bit disappointing that she had to return, but there was no other alternative...

Home
Manon will be home within the hour. They will closely monitor her to make sure everything is going well. The doctors were comfortable letting her out after seeing this morning's X-ray.

Setback
Manon is staying in Halifax. She will not be coming home Thursday either.
The doctors still feel she has a bit too much fluid near the heart. She will take more meds to see if that helps and she is scheduled for an X-ray on Friday morning. No one can be sure if it will show an improvement. We will need to wait, and hope for good news.
Even placing a new chest tube in an option. A really, really crappy option.

Demain ? Jeudi ?
There is still a possibility Manon could be coming home tomorrow. It will depend on the results of tests in the morning and the doctors' confidence she's "in the clear". Let's hope so... In the meantime, here are a few pictures of the last few weeks (real winners can still make you smile with chest tubes in place).

Mercredi ?
Manon's chest tube is out. Since then, she is much more active. In no time, she was playing in the playroom on the 7th floor.
Nothing is certain, but Manon's nurse speculated that she could be going home on Wednesday. We'll see if that is possible. I really really hope so...

Manon had another good day. She ate well, played more, and is draining less from her chest tube.
Her cardiologist feels that if drainage is minimal tonight, that they might remove the tube tomorrow. Then, they would keep an eye on her for a few days. On Monday morning, she is scheduled to get an X-ray and bloodwork.
It is possible that something is still contributing to her excess of fluid. However, since she is doing well, it will not require another procedure at this moment. They will monitor her in coming months...

Still draining
On verra si ça continue demain.
Though Manon continues to do well, she is still draining quite a bit of fluid. Therefore, her chest tube remains. It is difficult to predict how long it will take before it slows. Furthermore, this type of operation usually leads to the patients draining quite a bit.
Having said that, Manon had a very good evening. We played games and she was in a good mood. We'll see if that carries over tomorrow.

Meilleure mood
Manon had a good day. She is not yet eating as much as she could be, but she is better spirits.
It is possible her chest tube could be removed tomorrw, but there are no guarantees. Even if the tube is removed, Manon will still need to be monitored to make sure her oxygen levels remain stable.
I am leaving for Halifax before suppertime tomorrow, so I will have more to report then.

mardi

The fluid drainage subsided slightly, but is still an issue. Her tube must stay in place. She didn't eat very much, but she was more active tonight.
One of her visitors was the wonderful nurse who cared for Manon during the operation. She had a funny story from Thursday. Manon was asking for her mother while heading towards the OR. After being placed on the operating table, she looked at the nurse with evil eyes, and said (in English) : "I WANT MY MOMMY NOW" She is sharper than many thought she would be...

Mood bonne, drainage bad
