Donc... que faire ?

Manon était dans un état d'insuffisance cardiaque lors de sa naissance, alors il était important d'agir assez rapidement. Le sang dans son coeur voyageait trop souvent vers les poumons, car c'était le trajet le plus facile. Ceci causait des ennuis pour deux raisons principales : trop de fluide dans les poumons nuisait à sa respiration et un manque de sang qui se propageait vers le corps nuisait à l'alimentation de ses systèmes organiques.

Tout d'abord, on lui a fait prendre des diurétiques. Ces médicaments augmentent la production de l'urine. Donc, c'était une façon efficace de se débarasser de l'excès de fluide dans ses poumons. Cette stratégie a permis à Manon de se familiariser avec la vie à l'extérieur de sa mère au lieu de passer directement à une opération chirurgicale.

Ayant dit cela, les diurétiques n'allaient pas offrir à Manon une solution acceptable à long terme. À quelques semaines après sa naissance, les médecins ont placé une pulmunary artery band dans son coeur. En plaçant un minuscule morceau de plastique pour entourer son artère pulmonaire, ils ont su limiter le sang qui cherchait à se rendre aux poumons. Maintenant, Manon allait pouvoir grandir et vivre sans diurétiques. Pendant l'hiver, Manon a cessé de prendre ses médicaments, car le montant de sang qui s'en allait vers les poumons était contrôlé physiquement par sa band.

Manon was in a state of heart failure at birth, therefore it was important to act relatively quickly. Too much of her blood had a tendancy to travel from her heart to her lungs, mostly because that was the easier trajectory. This caused her problems for two main reasons : too much fluid in her lungs made breathing more difficult and a lack of blood going to the rest of her body lead to insufficient sustenance for her main organs.

Initially, Manon took diuretics. This type of medecine increases urine output. This was a way to limit the amount of fluid building up in the lungs. It was especially beneficial because Manon could now get used to life outside the womb instead of going directly to the operating room for surgery.

However, diuretics didn't offer Manon a suitable long term solution. A few weeks after birth, surgeons placed a pulmunary artery band within her heart. This band limits the flow of blood to her lungs. Now, Manon would be able to grow and get well without the help of the diurectics. Last winter, Manon stopped taking these medications since her band could physically achieve the balance the diuretics had earlier provided.
